But with IPFS, since the files are distributed across many nodes, there’s no single point of failure. It’s like having copies of a book in many different libraries. If one library closes, you can still go to another to get the book.

Now, how does this tie in with blockchain? Blockchain is all about decentralization and immutability. It’s a digital ledger that records transactions across multiple computers so that the record can’t be altered retroactively. When we use blockchain, we often need to store data, and that’s where IPFS comes in super handy.

For example, in a blockchain – based application, we might need to store large files like documents, images, or videos. Storing these directly on the blockchain can be really expensive and inefficient because the blockchain has a limited storage capacity and adding large files would make the network slow. Instead, we can store these files on IPFS, get their hashes, and then store just those hashes on the blockchain.

This way, the blockchain can still keep track of the files. And because the hash is unique to the file, any change to the file will result in a different hash. So, the integrity of the file is still maintained. It’s like having a receipt in the blockchain that points to the actual item (the file) stored on IPFS.

Another cool aspect is the security. Both IPFS and blockchain are designed to be pretty secure. IPFS uses cryptographic hashes to identify files, and blockchain uses cryptographic techniques to secure the transactions. When you combine them, you get an extra layer of protection. For instance, in a supply chain application, we can store product details, manufacturing records, and shipping information on IPFS. The hashes of these files can then be added to the blockchain. This creates an unalterable record of the product’s journey, which is great for things like proving authenticity and tracking provenance.

As a chain supplier, I see a lot of potential uses for this combo. In our industry, we deal with a ton of documents – contracts, certificates, and product specifications. These can be stored on IPFS, and their hashes can be included in the blockchain. This gives our clients an easy way to verify the authenticity of the documents, and it also ensures that the documents can’t be tampered with.

Let’s say we’re working on a big project with multiple suppliers and manufacturers. We can use IPFS to share large design files. Each change to the file gets a new hash. By recording these hashes on the blockchain, all parties can see the history of the design changes. It promotes transparency and trust among everyone involved in the project.

In addition, IPFS can help with data availability. Since our industry depends a lot on real – time information, if we store important data on IPFS, it can be accessed more quickly. With the distributed nature of IPFS, the data can be retrieved from nearby nodes, reducing latency.

But it’s not all sunshine and rainbows. There are some challenges when using IPFS with blockchain. One of the main issues is the lack of widespread adoption. Although IPFS and blockchain are gaining popularity, they’re still not as common as traditional technologies. This means that there might be a learning curve for our clients and partners. And since it’s a relatively new concept, there aren’t as many tools and support systems available.

Another challenge is the regulatory environment. Different countries have different rules when it comes to blockchain and data storage. We need to make sure that we’re compliant with all the relevant laws and regulations. This can get a bit tricky, especially when we’re dealing with international clients.

Also, the performance can sometimes be an issue. IPFS relies on the quality of the network.
